Tex Perkins Debuts His Ladyboyz Live

Um, how do we describe a night when Ladyboyz rock out? We can`t very well say rock out with their cock out now can we!

Last night, Tex Perkins debuted his Ladyboyz in all of their splendour at The Palms at Crown Casino.

The Ladyboyz featured a few old time and long-term former Perkins band mates. Charlie Owen who has been through nearly every Tex band was on guitar. James Cruickshank from The Cruel Sea played keyboards. Pat Bourke of Dallas Crane was the bass player. Gus Agars (The Vandas) on drums and Joel Silbersher (GOD) on guitar rounded up the band.

Tex Perkins and his Ladyboyz is definitely Tex’s craziest idea ever ... but it was a lot of fun.

The band took control of some of the tackiest and filthiest pop songs of the 70s and 80s and over the next one and three quarter hours tore them to shreds. The thing was, at the time, we never knew were we listening to filth.

Opening with 10CC’s ‘I’m Not In Love’, they dived into the pure filth of Dr. Hook’s ‘A Little Bit More’. The Ladyboyz then play one from the “best looking 60-year old in the world” Olivia Newton-John, questioned the intentions of Billy Idol with ‘Sweet 16’, uncovered an Australia perv classic in ‘Cum Said The Boy’ and then out came “the ladies” for ‘Three Times A Lady’.

Tex revealed how Captain and Tennille’s ‘Do That To Me One More Time’ shocked his mother. How ‘Hollywood 7’ is what you get when you won’t pay more than 7 bucks for a hotel in Hollywood. He told us the band America had the worst name ever before playing ‘Sandman’ but with the lyrics changed. “I understand you’ve been running from the man who drives a panel-van called the Sandman”.

Magic Dirt’s Adelita came on stage for Alice Cooper’s ‘You and Me’ and as they sang they performed somewhat of a contortionist act during the line “I want to wrap myself around you” when they did just that.

Tex announced that there would be no need to see Bonnie Tyler at Crown this Tuesday and Wednesday. He got in a few days early and did her 70s hit ‘It’s A Heartache’.

The highlight of the show was the most irreverent version of ‘My Sweet Lord’. Tex is definitely going to hell. Explaining that the Ladyboyz were not only a Christian act, “we are a catholic act’, Tex recalled his days as a Catholic schoolboy having to eat “the Body of Christ”. One of his female fans screamed from the audience “eat me Tex”. He then updated the George Harrison classic to include nutritional Catholic flavours and lyrics about “chewy jewy lord” and “tasty, crunchy lord” instead of the original “Hare Krishna, Hare Rama” words.

So how do you end a show such as this? By turning Alex Lloyd’s ‘You were Amazing” into the Ladyboyz “We were Amazing”.

Here is the setlist for Tex Perkins and His Ladyboyz at The Palms, Crown Casino, Melbourne, October 26, 2008:
