The BBC has been criticised by Ofcom, the British broadcast watchdog for not being quick enough in issuing an apology following a racist statement from American punk legend Iggy Pop during an interview broadcast in June.
The interview was conducted at the Glastonbury festival after Pop had just performed with his band The Stooges. In the interview he talks about the London suburb of Camden and mentions the "paki shops" that have popped up since he began going there.
A spokesperson for the BBC said "Iggy Pop is one of the wildest men in rock music and, as such, he has a built-in content advisory warning."
Ofcom ruled that the BBC had "failed in its responsibility to ensure the offence caused was justified by the context". It is not clear if any action has been taken.
They received just two complaints.
