Congratulations to Augie March who last night took away the Song of the Year award at the 25th Annual APRA Awards.
The night featured standout performances from Eskimo Joe, Colin Hay, Phrase, TV Rock and Kev Carmody with Missy Higgins and Paul Kelly but special mention must go to Tex Perkins and Tim Rogers who handed over a few awards, most notably, one to Bernard's Fanny. The tipsy duo brought the house down with the alcohol fueled banter. Roy and HG, look-out.The APRA Awards are special because they are voted by the songwriters for the songwriters. The APRA Awards bypass the hype and marketing driven other awards such as the MTV Awards and The ARIAs. This is the one award where real music people vote for real music people.
Hoodoo Gurus manager Michael McMartin was given the Ted Albert Award for outstanding services to music by managers John Watson and John Woodruff. His speech, including acknowledgment to his late wife Liz was inspiring.
International awards went to Jet Are You Gonna Be My Girl for Most Performed Australian Work Overseas and Santana Feel Better for Most Performed Foreign Work.
