Australia’s Prime Minister Julia Gillard has paid tribute to Aussie screen legend Bill Hunter who died at the age of 71 in Melbourne yesterday (May 21, 2011).
The Prime Minister said, "Mr Hunter played a key role as an acclaimed actor in helping to define Australian culture over five decades on screen and on stage."
"He told us Australian stories in an Australian voice at a time when we were debating and developing our sense of national identity."
William John ‘Bill’ Hunter was one of Australia’s best known actors having appeared in dozen of films including ‘Strictly Ballroom’, ‘Gallipoli’, ‘Newsfront’, ‘Muriel’s Wedding’, ‘Australia’, ‘Crackerjack’ and ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’.
He was admitted to a Melbourne hospice in May 15. He died May 21 from inoperable cancer.
