Actor Bill Hunter has died in a Melbourne hospice at the age of 71.
Hunter had been admitted to a hospice in the Melbourne suburb of Kew three days ago after suffering from cancer. Friends, family and fans had feared the worst when he moved from an apartment (where he chose to stay over hospital) into the Cartias Christi Hospice in Melbourne’s inner east.
The actor had appeared in a number of iconic Australian films including ‘Galipoli’, ‘Muriel’s Wedding’, ‘Pricilla, Queen of the Desert’ and ‘Australia’. He has lent his voice to ads for the AFL as well as the Keating government’s ‘Working Nation’ campaign.
He was born in the Victorian town of Ballarat on February 27, 1940 and from the 1960s has been a mainstay in the Australian film industry. Director Baz Lurhman recently described him as the “go-to iconic actor to synthesise quintessential Australian-ness.”
