Azerbaijan has taken out the number one spot in Eurovision 2011 with their first ever victory in the annual competition.
Their entry - 'Running Scared' was performed by Ell and Nikki and was voted the best in the competition by both a panel of judges and by fans at home. The song is loaded with tacky synths and the video is filled with cheesy dance routines, but don't take my word for it, have a listen/look for yourself:
It is only the fourth time the country has competed in Eurovision.
Now let’s face it, you might have heard of Azerbaijan, but do you really know anything about it? No? Neither did I. So here are some facts, according to the C.I.A. World Factbook:
Azerbaijan
- was part of the former USSR.
- borders Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Iran, as well as the Caspian sea.
- has a population of 8,372,373, 70.3% of which are between 15 and 64.
- ‘s capitol is Baku.
- is predominantly populated by the ethnic group Azeri (90.6% of the population).
- is officially a secular country, but 93.4% of the population are muslim.
- won Eurovision 2011.
Traditionally this means that the Eurovision song contest will be held there next year. You might want to read that CIA fact book before going though, after all "corruption is ubiquitous" and it is being watched by the US government for it's failure to address the human trafficking issues it faces. In reality, I believe the US government is watching Azerbaijan's plans to dominate the world of Europop. If I lived in Azerbaijan, I would be wearing a tin-foil hat.
Oh, and congratulations.
