Soul and R&B singer Etta James has been hospitalised after suffering from a urinary tract infection and sepsis.
Her son, Sametto James, told The Press-Enterprise that the 73-year-old had been admitted again, where she will remain for “as long as it takes to clear her infections”.
She had spent some time in hospital in early 2010 for similar problems and recently she has also been suffering from leukemia and dementia.
The paper also reports that the James family has been involved in a legal dispute over control of her assets and payment of her medical bills.
James, who was born Jamesetta Hawkins, has won four Grammys throughout her career. She is best known for her single ‘At Last’, but she had a number of other hits including ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’, ‘In The Basement’ and ‘Tell Mama’. She is known for her massive voice and spine tingling soul.
She was portrayed by Beyonce Knowles in the 2008 film ‘Cadillac Records’, which told the story of her label, Chess Records and it’s artists, including James, Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon.
