A slew of Christmas albums, including Susan Boyle’s second record, appear in this week’s new releases.
Susan Boyle’s second proper album The Gift, a mostly Christmas-themed album (apart from Lou Reed, Neil Finn and Leonard Cohen covers), is probably the biggest album released this week.
But it’s not the only Christmas release getting in early. Today there were seasonal compilations from Mario Lanza, Jim Reeves, Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, Doris Day, Cyndi Lauper, John Denver, Priests, and Brian Setzer Orchestra.
On a more pop tip, we have ex-Idol Jessica Mauboy’s gritty new record Get Em Girls, Ne-Yo’s soulful Libra Scale, Far East Movement’s Free Wired, and Cee-Lo Green’s latest solo album The Ladykiller (home to ‘F**k You’).
Among the more interesting albums include N.E.R.D’s fourth effort Nothing, kooks Of Montreal’s False Priest and cutesy girl-boy duo Mel And Kim’s Sidewalks.
Promising local indie acts include Oh Mercy with Keith St and John Steel Singers’ debut Tangalooma
More tunes for the old (or old-at-heart) include James Blunt’s third album Some Kind Of Trouble and The Kinks’ Ray Davies with his collaborative cover album See My Friends.
Maybe we’ll see if Escape The Fate and Cradle Of Filth can pull a surprise metal(core) number one like Bring Me The Horizon, but with Christmas coming, we doubt it.
Of course, there’s the usual Greatest Hits and Best Ofs released (that always seem to heavily populate the charts).
This week there are Greatest Hits from Jay-Z, Bon Jovi and Good Charlotte, as well as INXS’s Original Sin.
And Best Ofs from Sara Storer and Brad Paisley, and Essential titles from Paul Simon, Joe Satriani, Julio Iglesias, and Marina Prior.
