Australian radio had a major fail supporting Australian music this year.

Of the Top 30 Australian songs played on Australian radio this year, only 19 were released in 2009, according to a survey by AirCheck. On average, radio committed to support one new Australian song every 19.21 days.

In fact, two of the most played Australian songs on Australian radio this year were ‘Straight Lines’ by Silverchair (released in 2007) and ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine’ by Eskimo Joe, released in 2006.

Jessica Mauboy was the most supported artist with four songs played. Wes Carr was second most supported act with three songs receiving good rotation.

International break-though act Empire of the Sun faired low down the chart. ‘Walking On A Dream’ was a top 10 hit in the UK this year but was only the 26th most played Aussie song and the 130th most played song on Australian radio for 2009.

The Temper Trap, the other Aussie success story in the UK in 2009 didn’t even make the Top 30 locally, nor did Jimmy Barnes who had a number one album and his biggest albums in a decade.

Only 18% of the Top 100 most played songs on Australian radio in 2009 were Australian songs. Only three Australian songs made the Top 20. Only one made the Top 10.
