Former Minuteman and current Stooge Mike Watt plays bass for Kelly Clarkson.
Just as a reformed Stooges finish off their first studio album since 1973, their new bassist Mike Watt has spent some studio time with American Idol Kelly Clarkson. Pitchfork reports that the punk icon, whose efforts in the Minutemen became legend, was asked to replace the bass tracks on six songs on Clarkson's forthcoming album.Watt admitted that he hadn't heard of the singer before and was doing it as a favour for producer/engineer David Kahne who is an old friend of his. But he was very complimentary about the singer, telling Pitchfork, "I knew nothing of Kelly Clarkson before this but can tell you, in my opinion, that she can sing her ass off. Man, she's got pipes and goes for it."
Watt has been incredibly busy of late, knocking off his work on the new Stooges album and lining up tours with three different bands (although not with Clarkson's). He is seemingly running simultaneous tours through Europe in November and December with The Stooges, his Missingmen project (supporting the Red Hot Chili Peppers) and shows with Dos and Banyan.
