The Go Betweens have had a bridge named after them in their hometown of Brisbane.
The city of Brisbane has renamed the Hale Street Link Bridge, which spans the Brisbane river connecting Milton and South Brisbane to Go Betweens Bridge.It is not the first time the idea has come up. Shortly after the death of Go Between Grant McLennan, there was talk of renaming Elanor Schonell Bridge at the University of Queensland to the Grant McLennan bridge, but it never came to fruition.
The Go Betweens are one of the most influential bands to come out of the Queensland capital. Forming in 1977 by Grant McLennan and Robert Forster, the band appeared at a time when Queensland was governed by the ultra-conservative Joh Bjelke-Peterson. As a result, they moved to the U.K. where they were accepted and nurtured, eventually releasing ten albums.
Their last album was ‘Oceans Apart’ in 2005, a year before co-founder Grant McLennan died of a heart attack at the age of 48.
Robert Forster continues to release albums, most recently The Evangelist in 2008. He is also an award winning journalist, writing regularly for Australian magazine The Monthly.
