Nirvana`s 1991 hit `Smells Like Teen Spirit` topped the Triple J Hottest 100 of All Time on the weekend. Not a bad call! What was more telling though was that there were no songs from the 21st Century at all in the Top 10.
It says something that you have to scan all the way down to number 17 to find anything from this millennium. The 2003 Hilltops Hoods track ‘The Nosebleed Section’ satisfied that search. It was the highest charting song from this century.Muse’s 2006 hit ‘Knights of Cydonia’ ranked a mention at number 18 and ‘Seven Nation Army’, the 2003 hit by The White Stripes was at 20.
Triple J is positioned as Australia’s “youth network”. Are Australia’s youth more into Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, Led Zeppelin ‘Stairway To Heaven’ and John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ than newer acts like Franz Ferdinand, TV on the Radio or Kings of Leon? According to this chart they are.
Triple J listeners voted for David Bowie’s ‘Life On Mars’, The Rolling Stones ‘Paint It Black’ and Elton John’s ‘Tiny Dancer’. Johnny Cash rated a mention, so did Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys and the Beatles. There was no Jet, Pink, Katy Perry or Linkin Park.
