Perth psych rockers Tame Impala’s debut album wins triple j’s album of the year J Award.
The band rocketed to international awareness this year with Innerspeaker.
While they didn’t win any ARIAs (but were the subject of Jessica Mauboy’s infamous pronunciation of “de-butt”), they took home the annual all-Australian J Award during a raucous ceremony at Melbourne’s Ding Dong live venue last night.
Tame Impala beat out nine other albums, from commercial heavyweights Washington, Bliss N Eso, Birds Of Tokyo, Angus & Julia Stone and Sia, as well as lauded indie releases from Cloud Control, Bag Raiders, Parkway Drive and M-Phazes.
During a live-cross hour of celebrations, triple j’s Zan Rowe and Lindsay “The Doctor” McDougall presented three J Awards: Music Video Of The Year, Unearthed Artist Of The Year, and the feted Album Of The Year.
A representative for Tame Impala accepted the award, as the band are currently on tour in North America.
Directors Mairi Cameron and Stephen Lance won Music Video Of The Year for Washington’s ‘Sunday Best’ and Sydney quintet Boy & Bear won the unsigned Unearthed Artist award.
