How does a band whose debut album sells millions around the world fade to nothing before their third?
Jet has a new album on the way (apparently). You’d only know if you visit their website.‘She’s A Genius’, the first song from the album was released two weeks ago. Last week it sold 700 units in the band’s native Australia. This week it sold 990 units.
Sales of 1690 units in two weeks for the band who’s ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ was a hit all over the world in 2003? What went wrong?
Jet released their first album ‘Get Born’ in October 2003. It was a hit. The second album ‘Shine On’ came 3 years later. It did kind of okay,
Now Jet want fans who didn’t really care all that much three years ago to take notice today? It isn’t going to happen.
Look at the timeline. The time between the first Jet album and the third one is almost the same time The Beatles went from start to finish and released 13 albums.
Translate this to AC/DC time. Acca Dacca released their first 5 albums in less time than it took Jet to get out two.
That 18-year old fan who bought the first Jet album was 21 when the second one came out and will be 24 or 25-years old when the next one arrives.
The 18-year old who bought the first AC/DC album was 18 ?? for the second, 19 for the third, 19 ?? for the 4th and 20 for the 5th. They became AC/DC fans.
Jet never developed a fan base because they didn’t stay home enough to keep their fans in the family.
If you were 18 when The Beatles released ‘Please Please Me’, you were 25 when ‘Abbey Road’ came out. That was 13 albums of relationship between a fan and a band.
Jet don’t have many fans left. They never bothered earning them.
What a shame. They were Australia’s 21st century rock and roll hope.
