Stripe, the mobile radio network founded by Glenn Wheatley, has closed less than one year after launching.
Stripe was designed to bring multiple choice radio solutions to the audience by using mobile phones as the broadcast medium. The subscription-based model was planned to feature more than 100 radio streams after launching with around 30 stations.
The concept was to create genre based music stations such as metal, country and pop with a narrower demographic than the terrestrial stations such as 2DAY, MMM and Nova could offer.
However, unlike the terrestrial stations, Stripe cost to subscribe.
The service was available on both Optus and Telstra mobile networks but bandwidth charges on top of the subscription costs made the service prohibitive to a great slice of the population.
Stripe had many high profile investors including 2GB’s Alan Jones, Channel 9’s Richard Wilkins and Little River Band’s Glenn Shorrock.
A lot of the staff were let go a number of months back and Undercover understands that the remaining staff were told of the closure last week.
The Stripe website today has a single static message “Thank you for your support”.
