Simon & Garfunkel only ever made five albums. The fifth and last one, `Bridge Over Troubled Water’, was the big one.
‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’ was released on January 26, 1970. The title track won the Grammy Record of the Year and Song of the Year in 1971. The album won a further four Grammy Awards. The album was a number one hit in both Australia and the USA. As well as the title track, it gave us the hits, ‘The Boxer’, ‘Cecilia’ and ‘El Condor Pasa’.
‘Cecilia’ was a controversial song in its day. The biggest pop radio stations in Australia at the time were 2SM in Sydney and 3XY in Melbourne. They were owned by the Catholic Church. The stations banned ‘Cecilia’ because of the line “I got up to wash my face when I come back to bed someone is taking my place”.
