Simon & Garfunkel will be in Australia in just over a month. The tour is one of the year’s most anticipated performances.
As we countdown to Simon & Garfunkel down under, Undercover is giving you a backdrop of the music that made them legends.Today, we focus on the 4th Simon & Garfunkel album ‘Bookends’.
‘Bookends’ was released on April3rd, 1968.
The album is best known for the song ‘Mrs Robinson’ which was also featured in the movie ‘The Graduate’.
Three of the other songs, ‘Overs’, ‘Punky’s Dilemma’ and ‘A Hazy Shade Of Winter’ were also written for ‘The Graduate’ but rejected. ‘A Hazy Shade of Winter’ would eventually feature in a movie when it was covered by The Bangles and used in ‘Less Than Zero’ in 1988.
The opening track ‘Bookends Theme’ was also used in the movie ‘Girl, Interrupted’.
‘Bookends’ expanded the Simon & Garfunkel sound. Producer Roy Halee, later to work with Simon on ‘Graceland’ introduced a full band with bass and drums for this album.
