It is not a surprise to see Elbow throw at a few jokes to the audience. After-all, lead singer Guy Garvey does look a lot like Ricky Gervais.
Without a doubt the most musical moment at this year’s V Festival was Manchester’s Elbow but at one point when the music was happening because of a sound issue, Garvey told jokes.“I went to the doctor’s the other day and the doctor told me I had to stop masturbating,” he told the crowd. “I said, “Why I enjoy it”. The Doctor said “because I am trying to examine you”.
Then “What did the cow say to the farmer? Why don’t you ever kiss me when you are feeling my tits”.
OK, so the Melbourne Comedy Festival is also on right now. Maybe Garvey can do his own standup show. Well, hey I laughed.
Watching Elbow live makes you wonder why this band isn’t as big as Radiohead. The dynamics of the sound, the depth of the music, the consistency of the catalogue makes them one of the great live acts today ... and they can improvise comedy.
In 2008, they picked up the Mercury Prize for ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’. Just recently, they won Best British Group at the Brit Awards. They’ve done pretty much every major festival around Europe from Glastonbury and Reading and now V. Just a few weeks ago, they played their biggest gig ever at Wembley.
Elbow have been around since 1990. Who know, it may take 20 years for this band to finally break big. They deserve the recognition.
