Gabriella Cilmi surprised a lot of cold, hard-nosed music people this week in Texas when she played at the La Zona Rosa nightclub on a bill with Tori Amos and the Aussie BBQ, along with The Drones, The Grates, Josh Pyke and the Temper Trap.Gabriella might be young, but she knows how to work a room.
And this was Texas we are talking. So before we got “Sweet About Me” she boldly opened with Janis Joplin’s ‘Mercedes Benz’.
Let’s not throw the rock chick tag at her just yet although her version of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Whole Lotta Love’ was another adventurous move.
