Heath Ledger has won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
It is hardly a surprise. Almost every critic tipped ledger for the award. Bookies had him at 50 to 1 to win.The late star also won every major award for his role in the Dark Knight leading into the Oscars.
Ledger had not yet finished his work for The Dark Knight when he was found dead in New York.
Director Christopher Nolan had to recut the movie so that Ledger’s unfinished bits were explained in the plot.
The movie went on to earn more than $1 billion in revenues.
Ledger is not the only person to win a posthumous award. In fact, he is the 14th person to receive a posthumous Oscar.
Peter Finch was awarded one back in 1977, 10 weeks after he died in Beverly Hills. He won for Network.
The first posthumous award was given in 1939 to Sidney Howard for screenwriting Gone With The Wind.
The last one before Heath went to Conrad L. Hall for Road To Perdition.
