Dewey Martin, drummer for Buffalo Springfield, passed away on January 31.
Martin was 68-years old.Martin was the longest serving member although the band was together for just over two years. In was there at the start in April 1966 and at the end in May 1968.
Buffalo Springfield was one of the most important acts of the 60s although they never had massive success. It was who went through the band that gave them their legendary status.
Neil Young and Stephen Stills were in Buffalo Springfield. So was Jim Messina, who later joined Poco and Loggins & Messina.
Ritchie Fury also went to Poco after the break-up of Buffalo Springfield.
Dewey Martin is the second member of Buffalo Springfield to die. Bruce Palmer passed away in 2004.
Many of the Buffalo Springfield songs gathered momentum after the band had broken up. Stills ‘For What It’s Worth’ is still performed as part of the CSN set. Young recorded his original version of ‘Mr Soul’ in Buffalo Springfield.
Both Dewey and Palmer reformed Buffalo Springfield as Buffalo Springfield Revisited in the 90s but none of the other members participated.
Young paid homage to the band when he recorded the song ‘Buffalo Springfield Again’ for his 2000 release ‘Silver & Gold’.
The cause of Martin’s death is yet to be announced.
