Before you start visualising Bono in a tutu, do not fear. The Complexions Contemporary Ballet in Melbourne is only using the music of U2, not Bono himself.
The music of U2 will feature in ‘Rise’, coming to the Arts Centre in Melbourne next month. This is the first time U2 has licensed their music for work in a ballet. “U2’s music has a thread of passion running through it that connects with the heart and soul,” says choreographer Dwight Rhodem. “That energy, which has become the backdrop for the celebration of the human spirit in many ways, creates the inspiration for this new work. I want ‘Rise’ to be powerful yet joyful, to help all of us see the possibilities in our world, I want this dance to make a connection with the audience...I want them to leave the theatre hopeful.”
The ballet will feature the U2 songs:
Where the Streets Have No Name
Elevation (2005 live from Milan)
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
Trip Through Your Wire
With or Without You
Vertigo
Desire
Walk On
Pride (In the name of love)
Beautiful Day
Other songs from Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Odetta are also featured.
‘Rise’ will play at the Arts Centre from February 26 to March 7. It will then head to Adelaide for performances from March 10 to 12.
