When Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs played at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne on March 12th, 1972, 200,000 fans turned up for the gig.
As part of the ongoing restoration of classics, Gil Matthews has taken the original tapes into his studio and brought the sound of the 72 concert up to 21st century standards for release as ‘Long Live Rock and Roll (Long May You Move It So).What was special about the show was that it featured the new song ‘Long Live Rock and Roll’. Although unrecorded, it was tipped to become a new studio recording for The Aztecs. It never eventuated, so you will hear it here first.
The CD will also feature three bonus tracks from a show at Festival Hall that same year.
The Aztecs single ‘Believe It Just Like Me’ was played at the show. The song was rarely performed live in its day.
What was interesting about the 70’s line-up of Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs was that they only ever recorded one studio album, 1973`s ‘More Arse Than Class’.
Studio stuff prior to that was just the occasional singles like ‘Most People I Know Think That I’m Crazy’ and ‘Believe It Just Like Me’.
‘Long Live Rock and Roll (Long May You Move It So)’ will be released on December 15.
