Last night in Melbourne, The Age journo Patrick Donovan put on another mighty EG Awards.
Nick Cave won Album of the Year for ‘Dig Lazarus Dig’; Died Pretty was inducted into the Hall of Fame. This year’s other winners were Skyhooks ‘Living In The 70s’ for favorite Australian album of all time; Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu for Best Male Artist; Sophie Koh for Best Female Artist; Little Red for Best New Talent; Rage Against The Machine for Best Tour and The Presets for ‘My People’.
The show featured crack performances from Little Red and Died Pretty as well as finale from The EG Allstars, featuring Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus), Paul Kelly, Mark Seymour (Hunters & Collectors), Ash Grunwald, Even, Lilith Lane, Phil Manning and Katy Steele (Little Birdy).
Seymour brought along the Hunters horn section to perform their classic ‘Say Goodbye’. (Man, that band needs to do more shows). Dave Faulkner dusted off the Hoodoo Gurus ‘I Want You Back’ while Ash Grunwald and Phil Manning belted out the Chain blues classic ‘Black & Blue’.
The EG Awards, like the AIR Awards a few weeks ago did disappoint though. There was no acknowledgement of the legendary Gabriella Cilmi. How can anyone win all those ARIA’s and not receive any further credit.
Shame on you Paddy, Shame on you Andrew.
