Buju Banton Cancels Due To Gay Protests

Reggae star Buju Banton (real name Mark Myrie) has been forced to cancel a show in Brighton, UK thanks to protests and pressure from gay and lesbian rights groups, as well as the local council and the police.

Banton's 1992 hit ‘Boom Bye Bye' contains homophobic lyrics talking about shooting the “nasty man” in the head.

It is not the first time Banton has been forced to cancel a show in the U.K. In 2004 a Manchester show was pulled for similar reasons.

The star, who turns 33 next week, has refused to apologise for the song and back down from his homophobic stance, although he has downplayed the significance of his lyrics claiming them to be “metaphorical”.

You can see Buju Banton across Europe and the USA over the next couple of months.
