Melbourne is a city of bars and nightlife - a setting that helps it's vibrant music and arts community thrive, and gives the city its world-renowned flavour.
Part of the appeal of this wonderful city is the nightlife that is found in so few cities around the world and now the Brumby Government is planning a three month trial of a 2am curfew - meaning you cannot enter any bars in Melbourne after 2am.Smokers who leave a venue for a cigarette will not be allowed to re-enter.
The move is aimed at curbing alcohol-fuelled violence, by reducing the amount of "bar hoppers" circulating the CBD and the Brumby government points to other cities such as Brisbane for the plan's success.
The official Facebook group "I will party on Parliament House steps in protest against the 2am curfew" says "We are the SayNo2am Coalition, backed financially and made up of nightclub owners, hospitality workers, event promoters, security companies and YOU.
"We will show rational debate and reasons against having the bans, from the people that work in the industry. We are working tirelessly to research this topic and come up with facts that can dispute the current flawed ideas. We are gaining more and more important people to the cause every single day."
Protest the ban on Friday May 30 from 11pm on the steps of Parliament House on Spring Street, Melbourne.
