Former Midnight Oil front man now Labor politician was today given the responsibility of Environment, Heritage and Arts Minster in the newly elected Australian Labor government.
While Garrett is responsible for the Australian environment, he will not be the minister for Climate Change, that job being left for Peny Wong.Wong will spearhead Australia's newfound positive look on climate change, but since she was never a rock star, who cares?
Garrett, a long time member of minor political parties, such as the Nuclear Disarmament Party, turned to the Labor Party in time for the 2004 election, which saw him elected as the federal member for Kingsford-Smith in Sydney.
When Kevin Rudd became leader of the party, Garrett was promoted to Shadow Minister for the Environment.
Midnight Oil have only played two shows since finding themselves fronted by a federal politician, one at Sydney's WaveAid - a concert to raise money for the victims of the South East Asian tsunami, and a secret show the night before at the Manly Leagues Club.
The socially conscious band brought Australian indigenous issues and much more to the world's attention, selling millions of albums worldwide.
