Mischa Barton appears as a downtrodden Russian lesbian abattoir-worker in new film 'Finding t.A.T.u'.
'Finding t.A.T.u' is based on a Russian novel 't.A.T.u Come Back'. The story of two misfit t.A.T.u fans - one American, one Russian - was written as text messages by Russian politician and twice-failed Moscow Mayoral candidate Aleksy Mitrofanov. Mischa Barton plays the down-at-heel Russian character Lana Starkova.The novel was based on the true story of two t.A.T.u fans who ran away to Moscow, killing one of their mothers in the process. Both girls are currently serving prison terms.
According to the film's production house RAMCO, after the girls meet at a concert by the faux-lesbian pop sensation, they "plunge into the attractive yet dangerous world of nightlife, experience adventures on the verge of fairy-tale and nightmare, and undergo trials of their own friendship."
The titular duo appear in the film and have also written new music for it.
It was directed by Oscar-nominated British filmmaker Roland Joffe, best known for '80s epics 'The Killing Fields' and 'The Mission'. He was also an uncredited co-director of 1993's 'Super Mario Bros.'
'Finding t.A.T.u' (which has also been credited as 'You And I') is in currently in post-production and is slated to debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008.
