Bette Midler has signed on for a role in the comedy 'The Women'.
The movie, based on the 1939 play of the same name, is about a wealthy New Yorker who leaves her cheating husband and heads off with other society women to a resort.Bette Midler plays a five time divorcee. It also stars Cloris Leachman as a housekeeper; Carrie Fisher plays a noted magazine writer; Lynn Whitfield plays the head fashion buyer for Saks Fifth Avenue; Joanna Gleason plays a high society diva; Ana Gasteyer plays a co-worker at Saks Fifth Avenue with Eva Mendes' character, 'Crystal Allen'; Debi Mazar plays a manicurist at Saks.
The screenplay for the movie was written by Diane English, who created the Murphy Brown series starring Candice Bergen. Bergen also stars in this movie playing the part of Meg Ryan's characters mother.
'The Women' also reunites Bette Midler and Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger. Midler recorded the Stones song 'Beast of Burden' in the 80s and Mick starred in her video. Jagger is listed as one of the producers of 'The Women'.
