Enigmatic citizen-of-the-world Ben Lee felt compelled to cover an entire album by Against Me!
Lee admits on his blog that he became quickly obsessed with the latest album, 'New Wave', from Florida folk punks Against Me! After hearing the buzz, and that friend Tegan Quin of Tegan & Sara had guested on it, he downloaded the album.Listening during a marathon US to Australia flight, Lee wrote, "I fell in love with the album. Really. Like, couldn't stop listening to it. As heavy and gnarly as it sounds at times, it is unmistakably a pop masterpiece." The only thing to do is to cover 'New Wave' in its entirety.
All ten versions of the songs are on his dot com, with a cute doctored cover using a fang-baring cat instead of 'New Wave's roaring tiger. They can each be streamed, but Lee has offered a link to download the whole album of his versions.
Comments on Lee's blog show unfamiliarity with the originals. Against Me! posted a link to a news story about the cover version on their myspace the day after, but have so far refrained from making any value judgments.
