Hearty punk rockers Against Me! speak about their major label debut 'New Wave'.
The adored punk outfit, formerly on well-loved punk rock indie Fat Wreck Chords, have spoken to Billboard. Singer and primary songwriter Tom Gabel noted that the album, their fourth full-length, was written differently to any of their previous efforts. "After we signed, we were like, 'Sh*t, we're going to have to write this record on the road because [Sire] is going to want us to record as soon as we're done touring."What resulted, he says, is also a step away from what made them a revered cult act: rollicking, heart-on-sleeve, folk punk anthems. "It's definitely a rock record," Gabel said, "I just wanted to write good individual songs that stood on their own."
He asserted that the band haven't lost the socio-political fire that marked former releases, most specifically 2005's incendiary minor classic 'Searching For A Former Clarity'. He promises "optimistic" songs "with defiance". He notes, "In the face of everything that's happening in the world around us ... I wanted to write about topics that other people can identify with."
'New Wave' has been produced by Butch Vig (of Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins producing fame, as well as his own band Garbage), and is set for a July 10 release.
