Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo has expressed sadness at the demise of Tower Records on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard.
With more and more music being sold in the digital format, CD retailer was forced to file for bankruptcy. The Hollywood store closed for the last time at the end of last year.Cuomo worked at the store for 18 months prior to forming Weezer, and credits his experience there as introducing him to the world of alternative rock.
"Working there was my crash course in music, " he said. "That's where I first heard Nirvana, The Pixies, Sonic Youth. Without having worked at Tower, I don't know how I would have moved beyond just listening to heavy metal, and Weezer definitely would have never existed, at least not in the form it exists."
Meanwhile, Tower Records has sold its web business to Miami-based music seller Caiman for $US4.2 million.
