In a major coup, Sydney rapper Figgkidd gets sample approval from the late, great James Brown.
The rapper was approached by 16-year old local producer Ace Wonder (aka Adrian Salac) with a disc of beats in the hope that Figgkidd might use some for a local mixtape. Over the next ten months, the rapper was negotiating the ambitious idea of getting approval to sample 'I Feel Good (I Got You)' by the Godfather Of Soul, James Brown.Sadly, at the time the clearances were approved and a dotted line was being prepared, James Brown passed on. A tragedy, surely for the music world, and an added disappointment that Figgkidd may never get to pay tribute to the man.
But good to their word, James Brown's lawyer and senior manager not only approved the musical sample but gave Figgkidd use of an original recording of Mr. Dynamite performing the song for the hook.
So James Brown and Figgkidd fans alike can rejoice at the release of 'Feel Good' on March 26, the first single from his self-titled album due out on April 16. A sample can be heard on his myspace.
