Some of you will be familiar with the Billy Squier " Rock Me Tonight" video. On more than one occasion friends and I have gathered around Youtube at 3am on a Saturday morning to witness the " career ending" video that is simaltaneously hilarious and disturbing.
If you are not familiar with the " Rock Me Tonight" video here is a brief outline. Often described as one of the worst music videos in existence the clip shows Squier putting on a pink tank top and making crazy and uncoordinated choreographic movements (you can't call it dancing) around a bed with pastel-colored satin sheets. Apparently many viewers believed that Squier was gay, or on drugs after viewing for the first time. The clip was directed by Kenny Ortega, of High School Musical fame and it is Ortega that you can blame or applaud as the case may be for bringing this clip to the world and ruining the career of Billy Squier. Upon the airing of the World Premiere on MTV , Squier's concert ticket sales plummeted and he never achieved the career success he had achieved prior to the video being aired.
What you are about to see may disturb some viewers. Squier, after years of reflection remains philisophical about the career ruining video " The scars aren't that deep ... It's a bad part of a good life".
Pete Angelus manager of Van Halen was not so kind in his response to the idea that Squier had been a victim of misguided direction "I don't care if the director was lying dead on the floor," adding "you shouldn't have put on a fucking pink T-shirt and danced around like that."
