No. It' s one of the greatest bars in the world because it keeps the passionate rock and roll worker bees of this city and likewise punters, fed and nourished with live national and international rock n roll round the clock all year long. Why has the question been raised? Read on.
Last night (Wednesday night) Lady GaGa, arguably the biggest artist in the world today, held a secret end of tour performance and party at the Northcote Social Club. Nice one, if you are a fan and were able to guess what colour underpants Julia Gillard was wearing yesterday in order to get the lowdown on the "secret" event.
Interestingly, GaGa's first preference was Cherry Bar in AC/DC lane Melbourne. It's got a 200 person capacity and is a well known haunt for Melbournes rock n roll community. However, negotiations with Mother Monster broke down when bar owner and all round good guy James Young insisted that her band have the stage cleared by 9pm to make way for Mildura blues-rock 2-piece Jackson Firebird who were doing Week One of
their Wednesday mini-Residency, part of their incendiary 'Paper, Scissors, ROCK Tour'.
Young has since made the following statement, "At Cherry, Jackson Firebird comes before Lady GaGa because we honour our existing bookings to local acts" And there you have it ! The reason as to why Cherry Bar is NOT the Stupidest Bar In The World.
It's delightfully refreshing to know that the opportunity to host a "secret" Lady GaGa end of tour party is not as important as giving Australian local talent their dues and not flicking them off like a mosquito to make way for false kudos, money and faux fame. God Bless James Young and the Cherry Bar.
By the way you can see Jackson Firebird next Wednesday at Cherry for free, two sets from 9pm. Lovely.
