Here's a special treat for fans of The Rolling Stones. The ACMI cinemas in Melbourne will be showing Jean Luc-Godards 1968 documentary " Sympathy for The Devil" from May 12th to May 30th.
Jean-Luc Godard relocated briefly to London after the May '68 riots in Paris and set about making a film to "subvert all civilised values" (The Observer). The result is a countercultural mash-up of music and politics as Godard cuts between takes of the Rolling Stones recording Sympathy For The Devil (in which Jagger-as-Lucifer surveys the spoils of history) and staged scenes of young revolutionaries (who are intent on making their own history).
Godards long, lavish tracking shots inside the Stones' recording studio observe the band reworking and recording the classic Stones track. Scenes are political in their own way and tellingly reveal the pecking order within the Stones' own power structure. Who can guess who the roosters are?
Sympathy For The Devil will be screening at Acmi Cinemas in Melbournes Federation Square from May 12 - 30th. Tickets are very reasonably priced at Full $15 Concession $12 and ACMI Member $11. Click here to purchase; http://tickets.acmi.net.au/single/psDetail.aspx?psn=1080
