Legendary New York City guitarist pop singer/songwriter Paul Collins will return to Australia for a one-off series of gigs in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart in May, 2012.
Collins' greatest claim to fame is perhaps his collaboration in the creation of the song Hangin' On The Telephone, originally recorded by his seminal 70's pop band The Nerves, then later covered by Blondie to become their global breakthrough hit.
Collins continued his notoriety by playing in The Breakaways before forming The Beat (or the American Beat as they were known in the '80s) and releasing the formidable power pop albums To Beat Or Not To Beat and The Kids Are The Same. Those releases are still noted today as the power pop album templates from that era. Collins has continued to ply his trade over the decades touring in the US and Europe with a successful underground reputation.
The live set for the Australian visit will be an across the board selection from three bands and a solo career from 18recorded albums, including songs such as Walkin' Out on Love, Rock'n'Roll Girl, Hangin' On The Telephone and the Australia top 20 chart hit, A Different Kind Of Girl, performed with his Australian pick-up band, The On And Ons (previously known as Sydney-based group, The Zeros) featuring guitarist Glen Morris (Kings Of The Sun/Screaming Tribesmen).
The shows will begin with some acoustic tunes and an intimate ramble of amazing rock stories about Collins' times in the scene and on the road. The intimate start to the show is an individual and personalised approach, where Paul tells his unique stories with a candour described as honest and mesmerising. Using inspiration from his humour-filled fictional autobiography,8 Million Stories: Pete The Fly, the start of the show is a revealing look at the man behind the American Beat.
Collins will then be joined by his band to tear the house down with some classic tunes. IfPaul Collins and The Zeros put on a show anyhting like the one they did last year punters are in for a huge treat. Not only that, a special four-track EP, mostly recorded in Australia, will be available as a ticketing bonus to all pre-sales for the shows (first 50 internet ticket buyers in each city).
