What a down hearted state of affairs when the death of one great musician is overshadowed by the death of another.
Apparently there was to be a proper tribute to the life of Clarence Clemons in memory of his many and generous contributions to music at the Grammys on Sunday night, however it was scrapped in favour of a lengthy tribute to Whitney Houston. I have no problem with a salute to the tragic Whitney, afterall the industry was still in a state of shock and she was "supposedly" if twitter is any indication very well loved.
Blogness On The Edge of Town ( Bruce Springsteen blog) reports that their was supposed to be a tribute to Clarence Clemons by fellow sax legend Maceo Parker. Here is a statement form Maceos facebook page;
“Thanks so much or all your messages and tweets about the GRAMMYs. I can now reveal that I was asked to perform a Clarence Clemmons (sic) tribute and then it got dropped to accommodate the tribute to Whitney Houston.”
Surely there were other segments that could have been ditched in order to give Clarence Clemons his due?
I believe Hidden Track writer Scott Bernstein got it right with this idea about what should have been dropped in order for Parkers tribute to occur-
" Cut one of Chris Brown's numbers, for crying out loud. Too bad we had to get a two-fer from the convicted felon (who got a standing ovation, yet) and missed out on giving the Big Man his due."
Nice one Scott Bernstein.
