After last weeks shutdown of MEGAUPLOAD by the U.S Department of Justice the internet group ANONYMOUS have retaliated by immobilizing CBS.com, Universal and Vivendi a French media company that formally owned Universal.
Last Thursday the U.S Department of Justice shutdown Megaupload and arrested four people in connection with racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to commit copyright infringement and other charges. Both the Department of Justice and the FBI released a joint statement and advised that the action against Megaupload was "among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States."
The now defunct Megaupload website is branded with Department of Justice and FBI seizure information advising that " This domain name associated with the website Megaupload.com has been siezed pursuant to an order issued by a U.S District Court. A Federal Grand Jury has indicted several individuals and entities allegedly involved in the operation of Megaupload.com and related websites, charging them with the following federal crimes. Conspiracy to Commit Racketeering, Conscpiracy to Commit Copyright Infringement, Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering, and Criminal Copyright Infringment"
It did not take long for the global hacking machine Anynomous to retaliate with the shutdown of CBS.com, Universal and Vivendi. Anonymous are best known for undertaking protests with the goal of promoting free speech and freedom on the Internet. Anonymous aren't the only ones protesting. Last Wednesday critics of proposed bills that would make it easy for the U.S Courts to go after piracy sites offshore staged a "blackout". Up to 10,000 websites participated and included Wikipedia, Wired, Google and Wordpress.
