EMI's Irish arm has instigated a High Court action against the Irish Government due to it's tardy response to issuing an order that would allow copyright owners to compel internet service providers to block access to websites that they consider to be engaged in the illegal distribution of music.
Last week the Irish division of global music giant EMI reported that profits had decreased by 50% since the 2011 financial year and sighted piracy as being a major contributing factor to the loss.
Apparently IRMA Irish Recorded Music Association already has an agreement in place with Eircom (Republic of Irelands largest telecommunication company) whereby Eircom will report back any detection of any customers sharing copyrighted music on peer-to-peer services. A " three strikes and your out " policy ensures that any customer detected more than thrice will have their broadband disconnected by Eircom. Hang on a minute....doesn't this sound a little too " Big Brother "? A little bit 1984?....I'm scared and I don't ever illegally download music.....
