A version of David Bowies "Jean Genie" recorded for British TV program "Tops of the Pops" in 1973 has resurfaced after being wiped by the BBC.
The first and only televised performance was broadcast 40 years ago and then assumed wiped or erased by the BBC. Come to the rescue John Henshall ! Apparently Henshall had asked producers for a copy of the performance as he wanted it for his show real. Hey presto 40 years later its the only surviving copy and was unveiled at the annual “Missing Believed Wiped” event held by the British Film Institute.
The first re-airing of the clip will happen as part of a BBC4 documentary, Tales of Television Centre, set to run in the new year. While your waiting you can listen to the live audio from the 1973 performance right here.
