What with the Sando (Sandrinham Hotel) in Sydney being sold and now the shocking news that The East Brunswick in Melbourne is set to close its doors to live music....What is happening to our live scenes in Australia.
There has never been a time when Australian Music was ever more prolific or loved. Yet we are constantly hearing about live music venues closing their doors to appease developers and residents.
Let the bands and punters of Australia make it very clear that they won't go lightly. In 2009 Melbourne saw unprecidented support for the local live music scene when 20,000 citizens marched the streets of the Melbourne CBD to protest new licensing legislation that would prevent live venues from continuing to provide live entertainment without breaking the bank. Maybe its time for all states and cities in Australia to voice their loud protest at the continuing closure of prize music venues that have provided entertainment and support to thousands of punters and bands alike.
It is a simple plan. Building in the vicinity of a live venue?.....install extra noise insulation. Residents happy, bands, punters and venues happy.
The closure of The East Brunswick will leave a huge hole in the Melbourne Live Music scene.
