The Australian Music Prize has narrowed the Top 25 down to its 2006 Shortlist.
The Australian Music Prize is the equivalent of the UK's Mercury Prize or the US' Shortlist Music Prize, where a selection of critics, musicians and music retailers join forces to vote on the finest album of the year. The Drones won in its inaugural year was 2005, a choice which gave the Prize the credibility it needed. Now, after announcing the Top 25 from hundreds of entries, the AMP has settled on its shortlist for 2006.The Shortlist is:
Augie March - 'Moo You Bloody Choir'
Bob Evans - 'Suburban Songbook'
Gotye - 'Heart's A Mess'
Howling - self-titled
Jackie Marshall - 'Fight n' Flight'
Lisa Gerrard - 'The Silver Tree'
Sarah Blasko - 'What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have'
The Drones - 'Gala Mill'
The Grates for - 'Gravity Won't Get You High'.
We're tipping a win for Augie March, who are painfully cerebral, have put in significant time in indie purgatory and have finally gained some mainstream acceptance. They're terribly worthy.
The winner will be announced on March 7.
