Tumbleweed and You Am I have been announced for the 2011 edition of the Community Cup, which is very exciting news.
You Am I front man Tim Rogers is a longtime friend of the Community Cup, having played on the Espy Rock Dogs team for as long as I can remember, but it has been many years (if ever?) since the band took to the stage.
“After my inconsistent, show-ponyesque performances on the field for the mighty Rockdogs,” Rogers explains. “I wanted to contribute ferociously to Melbourne’s premier A-list event by slaughtering our own back catalogue of cult classics post match!”
Joining You Am I will be recently reformed stoner band, Wollongong’s own Tumbleweed, making them the first band from New South Wales to perform in the Cup’s lengthy history.
Also taking to the stage will be The Mercy Kills and The Ravelles with Barry Morgan (from the World of Organs!) taking care of the national anthem.
Traditionally, the Cup always has a musical theme, which in the past has included Devo, The Clash and The Ramones. This year the theme is ‘Do You Love Me?’ - that’s the Nick Cave song, not the Contours, so expect all the bands performing to throw a Cave song into their set.
Of course it’s not just about the music, there’s also an AFL match played by musicians and presenters from 3RRR FM and 3PBS FM who don’t know how to play football, and smoke and drink too much.
All proceeds go to Reclink Australia, who provide sporting supplies and activities to disadvantaged people.
The 2011 Reclink Community Cup will be held at Elsternwick Park, Elsternwick (that’s across the highway from Elsternwick train station) on Sunday June 26.
