Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson lead the 'Dreamgirls' Oscar nominations.
The film, released late last year, is based on an '80s Broadway musical which was in turn based on the career of Motown legends The Supremes. It has been rapturously received by critics and the public. Industry insiders thought the initial release as part of a 'roadshow', where the first ten airings were treated like a Broadway show with higher prices and colour programs, might annoy movie goers but the film was still a big commercial success on its mainstream run.At the Golden Globes on January 15, 'Dreamgirls' won three awards of its five nominations, Eddie Murphy scoring Best Supporting Actor, ex-American Idol Jennifer Hudson winning Best Supporting Actress and the film winning Best Picture- Musical Or Comedy.
Murphy and Hudson have been nominated in the same categories for the Academy Awards, and again Beyonce was ignored. The other nominations come in the form of more technical categories, with three nominations for the best original songs, as well as Art Direction, Costume Design and Sound Mixing.
The 79th Academy Awards will be presented on February 25.
