London music fans should be disappointed after the cancellation of the “supergig” planned by concert promoters Live Nation.
The promoters had been talking the show up to be huge, but had not named any names when it came to the lineup.
According to a report in NME, a spokesperson for the company said: “Unfortunately, with now only 13 days to go for the proposed Concert for Japan, sadly we are in a position where we have been unable to secure the artists required to produce the worldwide TV broadcast that we had hoped for and have therefore very reluctantly decided to proceed no further.”
Few details of the gig were actually known, but it was expected to be held at Wembley Arena. Recently, British newspaper The Sun quoted a source as saying “The supergig will be the biggest concert in years and a huge global spectacle. No names have been confirmed yet but the organisers are expecting a massive response from acts of all eras. They're hoping the TV audience numbers will break records."
The March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan was one of the worst natural disasters on record. Some estimates put the cleanup bill at around $300 billion. Get to any benefit gig you can find and give generously!
