Don Cheadle will play jazz legend Miles Davis in a forthcoming film project, but he says it’s not a biopic.
The Oscar-nominee for Hotel Rwanda spoke to Vibe about the planned film, which will show Miles Davis’ persona, rather than just recount his life.
“It’s just a movie,” he said. “Biopics are concerned with cradle to the grave depictions of a subject and character.
“This movie is much more expressive. And in my opinion, we’re hopefully making a movie that Miles would want to be in as opposed to it just 'being about Miles.' It’s all about his life but its not specific facts, those are irrelevant.”
There have been attempts to float a Miles Davis movie in the ‘90s, with Wesley Snipes and Michael Wright attached at different times.
But the Cheadle effort looks more solid. It’s currently in development and is securing financing, but it has the blessing of Davis’ family.
His son Erin Davis, who playing in latter incarnations of his father’s band, and other family members will serve as producers on the film.
The film is being considered for a 2013 release.
