The Sony Corporation has today announced the launch of Music Unlinited powered by Qriocity, its cloud-based digital music service.
The Qriocity platform offers unlimited access to stream around 6 million songs for around $12.99 a month for the on-demand service or $4.99 for the basic channels.
Sony's Music Unlimited includes the catalogues of the four major labels Universal, Sony, Warner and EMI.
It is available via the various Sony Internet-connected devices such as BRAVIA TV, Blu-Ray Disc player, Blu-ray Disc Home Theatre system and PlayStation 3 as well as Sony VAIO and other personal computers.
Music Unlinited is the first cloud based music service available in Australia and it means that you do not need to own any physical discs or downloads but can still listen to whatever you want, wherever you want, whenever you can access the system.
This is the first major competitor to the iTunes business model but Music Unlimited is also seen as a real threat to terrestrial radio, especially when a mobile device is released for the car.
With Music Unlimited you no longer need to listen to a radio stations preselected playlist and hope to hear a song you want to hear. Qriocity will give you everything you want at any time.
The premium $12.99 subscription for Australia gives you unlimited access to the six million songs in the database on-demand
Music Unlimited was tested in the UK in December and launched in France, Germany, Italy and Spain last month. Australia and New Zealand can access the service as of today.
