Mondo Rock have announced they will not be taking part in the upcoming Roxy Music Australian tour despite advertisements still running on radio as recently as this morning saying that they are.
A statement from Manager Mark Sydow back on February 3rd reads, “It is with great regret that Mondo Rock today announces that it is no longer part of the Roxy Music tour of Australia due to circumstances beyond its control.
The band apologises to fans for any inconvenience”.
Posters for the tour feature the Mondo Rock name in large print. In Australia Mondo Rock had a lot more hits and far greater sales than the headliner Roxy Music.
The advertisement running on Melbourne radio station 3AW also uses a piece of Bryan Ferry’s solo hit ‘Let’s Stick Together’ as the soundtrack. Roxy Music have never performed the song live. Their setlist is limited to only Roxy Music songs, never Bryan Ferry solo material.
A spokesperson for Mondo Rock has confirmed with Undercover that “a breakdown in negotiations with the promoter” was the reason for the band’s withdrawal from the tour but would not make any further comment.
Reviews for the current Roxy Music tour in the UK have been mostly negative. The Guardian called it “pretty humdrum” and said “Bryan Ferry said almost nothing for an hour except “thank you”.
Robert Heller from Bloomberg called the show “cheap, lazy and interminable”.
Andy Gill in The Independent wrote “this should have been a torrent of exuberant memories, but for substantial portions of the set the longueurs are alleviated only by the consistently exciting guitar work of Phil Manzanera, as the band leads us around some of the less sparkling corners of their history. It's like going through a photo album and finding several of the most important snapshots missing.”
