Luther Campbell, from rauchy rap crew 2 Live Crew, is running to be mayor of Miami-Dade County.
Although he’s best known for the down n’ dirty rapping of 2 Live Crew, that incited Tipper Gore in the late ‘80s, Campbell has been hugely active in his community since.
He has run record labels promoting the explosion of Southern Rap in the early ‘00s, he’s been an actor, he write a regular column for the Miami New Times, and he’s even taken on the Supreme Court over 2 Live Crew’s pornographic parody of Roy Orbison’s ‘Pretty Woman’ in 1994.
Campbell announced his run for mayor and was interviewed by the paper he write for, saying, “Why is our government only serving one set of people? That's what is pushing me to run.” He also cited frustration as a prime motivator.
His platform centres around job creation, housing and development and creating inner city gated communities, and health care.
He’s even promised to raise taxes to pay for it all (including taxing the earnings of strippers).
He said, referring to his 2 Live Crew nickname “I don't expect anyone to just vote for me because I am Uncle Luke. They are going to vote for me because Uncle Luke wants to do something about the way this county is headed.’
Voters go to the polls on March 15.
